The 3 ports on the top are positioned to counter the natural "high and to the right" recoil by forcing gas pressure out of the holes to counter muzzle rise. The half-moon cuts on each side force the gas flat out to the right and left which keeps the barrel steady shot after shot, and it's designed for a bayonet to mount without interfering with performance. The plunger pin notch is located at 12-o’clock position to match the timing with the standard AK-74 type front sight block
