The FAIR Trade Group needs your help! Firearms imports compose a significant percentage of the US commercial, law enforcement and military annual sales. However, few members of the public recognize the tenuous nature of firearms import policy, regulations and law. ATF has a track record of changing policies without notifying licensed importers, suspending import license processing without hearing and failing to understand the need for consistency in rulings. This track record has caused businesses to fail, limited or banned access to certain firearms and jeopardized future imports.
Historically, importers have borne the brunt of this uncertainty but this must change if wholesalers and retailers and customers wish to continue to have access to a vibrant, competitive import market with a diverse offering of firearms, accessories and parts.
FAIR is the only organization devoted exclusively to representing the interests of the import and export business community. Our mission is to seek and protect access to the broadest diversity of firearms, parts and accessories for collectors and sport shooters. We accomplish this by working constructively with the ATF, the Department of State and Congress where we can and finding ways to ‘encourage’ favorable outcomes when we can’t.
- FAIR is the only voice for Importers and Exporters with a sole focus on these areas;
- FAIR has a track record of success in promoting business opportunity and minimizing regulatory hassle;
- FAIR has an aggressive agenda on both the Import and Export side that is designed to promote business development and minimize business risk;
- Our policies will benefit the entire firearms community, not just one sector.
In 2008, we are pursuing an agenda that includes both an offensive and defensive component. At ATF we are seeking to solidify the regulatory landscape as a hedge against future political change. At the same time we are seeking to reopen markets for certain firearms that have been closed to us. Both of these activities are designed to promote business certainty and foster opportunity for the entire firearms community.
On the export side we are actively engaged with the Department of State to clarify and make public decision criteria and export policy. Current US export criteria for firearms remains a disjointed compendium of policies based on historic decisions and perceptions of firearms that are wildly varied and fail to recognize realities in international commerce. This has got to change in order to allow for meaningful US participation in legal and safe global firearms sales.
Now is the time when we need support — Presidential election uncertainty requires we be engaged and active today, not after things get bad. Participation in FAIR requires only a modest commitment. For a small commitment, you can participate in protecting future access to the widest variety of firearms.
